Why you can't bulk edit variations on Etsy listings with domestic & global pricing

· 3 min read

Etsy's domestic & global pricing lets you charge different prices at home and abroad, but it also blocks many variation changes from outside Etsy's own editor. Here's what's going on, which changes are affected, and how to work around it.

Etsy’s domestic & global pricing lets you set one price for buyers in your own country and a different price for everyone else. For sellers whose shipping costs, taxes, or margins differ a lot between local and international orders, that’s useful.

It comes with a catch that Etsy mentions only briefly: once a listing uses it, many changes to its variations can no longer be made from outside Etsy’s own listing editor. That includes bulk editing tools, spreadsheet imports, and anything else that works through Etsy’s API.

If you’ve seen a bulk variation edit fail on some listings with a message about domestic & global pricing, this is why.

What Etsy actually says

When a tool tries to change the variations of one of these listings, Etsy can refuse the request with this message:

To edit variations for listings with domestic & global pricing, open Etsy.com in a mobile or desktop browser.

In other words, Etsy wants those changes made by you, in its own editor. Etsy’s help article on adding domestic, global, and US-specific pricing also says regional pricing isn’t available through third-party apps.

This isn’t a limit of any one tool. Every app that edits listings goes through the same Etsy API and gets the same answer. Everlyst now shows it as a plain explanation instead of Etsy’s raw error text, but it can’t get around it.

Which changes are affected

Etsy hasn’t published an exact list of which variation changes it blocks on these listings, so the honest answer is “it depends.” Here’s what we’ve seen in real jobs:

  • Renaming an option, such as changing “Navy” to “Midnight Blue”, was refused.
  • Adding new combinations, such as a new size, was refused.
  • Turning a combination off was sometimes refused, even on listings where the same kind of change had gone through before.

We haven’t seen price-only changes, or listings without variations, hit this block. That’s what we’ve observed, not a promise from Etsy. Etsy can change how this works at any time, and other developers have reported edits going through as long as the variation structure stays the same.

There’s also no reliable way to tell ahead of time. Etsy’s API doesn’t currently tell tools whether a listing uses domestic & global pricing, so Everlyst can’t warn you before you start. The refusal arrives only when the change is sent.

What happens in Everlyst

When Etsy refuses a listing for this reason:

  • That listing isn’t changed. Etsy rejected the whole update for that listing, so nothing was partly applied.
  • Other listings carry on. Listings in the same job that don’t use domestic & global pricing are updated as normal.
  • The result says what to do. The job result explains that Etsy blocked the change because of domestic & global pricing, and tells you to make it in Etsy’s listing editor instead.

Because nothing changed on the blocked listing, there’s nothing to undo for it in Backup & Restore.

A workflow that works

You can still use bulk tools for most of your shop and handle the blocked listings by hand.

  1. Run your bulk edit as usual. Most listings will go through.
  2. Check the job results for listings refused because of domestic & global pricing.
  3. Make those changes on Etsy.com. Open each listing in Etsy’s listing editor in a browser and change the variations there.
  4. Sync your shop in Everlyst and wait for it to finish, so Everlyst has those listings as they are now.
  5. Export a fresh Variations CSV before your next import if you work in spreadsheets. An older file still describes those listings as they were before your manual edits, and re-importing it can fail or be refused. (Our post on spreadsheet conflict handling explains how Everlyst treats rows that no longer match.)

If you change variations on these listings often, it’s worth asking whether domestic & global pricing is still earning its keep on each one. For some listings, a single price with adjusted shipping profiles does the same job without the editing restrictions. See our Etsy pricing guide and Etsy variations guide for the trade-offs.

The short version

Domestic & global pricing is set by Etsy, and so is the rule that many variation changes on those listings must be made in Etsy’s own editor. Bulk tools, Everlyst included, can’t override it. What a good tool can do is tell you clearly which listings were blocked and leave everything else untouched, so you only have to handle the exceptions by hand.
