Description
The long-form text on a listing page - context for buyers and a secondary SEO signal.
- Character limit: no hard limit (recommended < 20,000)
- First 160 characters: shown above the fold and used for meta description
- Formatting: plain text only - no Markdown, no HTML
- Line breaks: yes, single newlines render
Descriptions are where buyers read after they’ve decided your photos and price are interesting. They’re also a moderate SEO signal - Etsy reads them, just less heavily than the title.
What goes above the fold
The first ~160 characters render before any “Read more” link. That’s the slot for:
- A one-line product summary.
- The single most important spec (size, material, customization options).
- A reason to buy now (limited stock, ships in X days).
What goes below
Everything else: full specs, materials, dimensions, care instructions, shipping notes, FAQs, return policy reminders. Buyers who scroll are buyers who care, so don’t pad it - answer the questions you actually get in messages.
Formatting reality
- No Markdown, no HTML, no bold, no bullet characters that render. What you type is what shows.
- Line breaks survive. Use them generously.
- All-caps headings work as visual anchors. (SHIPPING =========== reads as a heading.)
- Emoji render but use sparingly.
SEO weight
Etsy indexes description text, but the title and tags carry far more weight. Don’t try to rank a listing on description alone - it’s there to convert, not to be discovered.
- Writing the description as marketing copy. Buyers came to read specs, not your origin story.
- Pasting from Word and inheriting weird quote characters that mangle Etsy's display.
- Read the last 30 buyer messages to your shop. Every recurring question belongs in the description.
- Reuse a "Shipping" and "Returns" block across all listings - bulk-edit lets you update them in one pass.
