Search visibility
How often your listings appear in Etsy search results for relevant queries.
- Where to measure: Shop Manager > Stats > Traffic
- Influenced by: title, tags, category, attributes, listing quality score
- Etsy search ≠ Google search: each has its own ranking system
- Listing-level metric: each listing has its own visibility per query
Search visibility is the loose term for “how often your listings show up in Etsy search results.” It’s not a single number Etsy reports - it’s an inferred metric from your impressions, your search query traffic in Stats, and your gut feel from monitoring competitor positioning.
What drives it
- Relevance match - title, tags, attributes, category, and (less heavily) description matching the buyer query.
- Listing quality score - Etsy showing your listing more because it converts well.
- Recency - fresh listings or recently-sold listings get a short visibility boost.
- Buyer location and history - Etsy personalizes results, so two buyers searching the same term see different orders.
How to actually improve it
- Match the way buyers search, not the way you describe your product. “Mug for engineer” vs. “Cylindrical drinkware vessel.”
- Fill every attribute slot. Filtered search is invisible to listings with empty attributes.
- Use all 13 tag slots with phrases, not single words.
- Improve conversion on existing high-traffic listings before chasing new keywords. Etsy rewards what already works.
Etsy search vs. Google search
Etsy listings can appear in both, and they rank by completely different rules. Google cares about backlinks, page age, and structured data. Etsy cares about conversion, completeness, and recency. Optimizing for one doesn’t always help the other.
- Treating Etsy search like Google. Backlinks don't matter; conversion does.
- Constantly re-listing to chase the recency boost. Etsy isn't fooled.
