A structured piece of metadata Etsy collects (color, occasion, room, holiday) to power filtered search.

Attributes are the structured fields Etsy shows you after you pick a category - things like Primary color, Occasion, Room, Holiday, Material, Style, Recipient. They’re not the same as tags.
Tags are free-text keywords you choose. Attributes are picked from Etsy’s controlled list, and they power the filter sidebar buyers see on search results pages. If a buyer filters “Primary color: blue,” your listing only appears if you’ve set the blue attribute.
Why attributes get skipped
The “About this listing” section sits below the photos and feels optional. It isn’t. Etsy uses attributes to:
- Power buyer filters (the left rail on every search page).
- Match listings to gift guides, holiday roundups, and themed collections.
- Decide if your listing belongs in attribute-narrowed search results that have less competition.
A listing with no attributes filled in only appears in unfiltered search. As soon as a buyer narrows by color or occasion, you’re invisible.
How attributes vary by category
The set of available attributes is determined by the category you pick. A Jewelry > Necklaces listing gets prompted for chain length, gemstone, metal purity. A Home > Mugs listing gets prompted for material, capacity, theme. Switching categories rewrites the attribute prompts entirely - and any attributes that don’t exist in the new category are silently dropped.
- Skipping attributes because the form is long. You're invisible to filtered search until they're filled.
- Switching category late in the listing's life - Etsy drops attributes that don't map to the new category, and you have to re-fill them.
