Taxonomy

Etsy's tree of categories and the attribute sets attached to each category leaf.

Quick facts
  • Maintained by: Etsy
  • Updated: occasionally, without warning
  • Affects: which attributes you can fill on a given listing
  • API exposure: yes (used by tools that build listings programmatically)

Etsy’s taxonomy is the full tree of categories - top-level all the way down to specific leaves - plus the attribute sets attached to each leaf. When you pick “Mugs,” the taxonomy tells Etsy which attributes to prompt you for: capacity, material, theme, color, occasion.

Why this matters to most sellers

You don’t directly interact with “the taxonomy” - you just pick a category from a dropdown. But the taxonomy is what’s behind that dropdown, and it’s what dictates:

  • Which attribute fields appear under “About this listing.”
  • Which buyer filters your listing can be matched against.
  • Which fields the Etsy API expects when creating a listing programmatically.

Why this matters to anyone using bulk tools

Tools that create listings via the Etsy API (Everlyst, Shop Uploader, custom scripts) have to know the current taxonomy to fill attributes correctly. Etsy occasionally updates the taxonomy - a category gets renamed, a new attribute is added, an old one deprecated - and tools have to keep up.

What you do about it

  • When Etsy adds a new attribute (e.g., “Sustainability claims”), revisit listings in affected categories and fill it. Otherwise you’re missing a filter signal.
  • When Etsy moves a category (rare), re-check that your listings landed in the right new spot.
  • If you use a bulk tool and an upload fails with “invalid attribute,” it’s usually a taxonomy mismatch - the tool’s cache is stale, or you’re sending an attribute the new category doesn’t accept.
