Category is Etsy’s global classification of what your listing is. Picking “Home & Living > Kitchen & Dining > Drink & Barware > Mugs” tells Etsy your listing belongs in mug searches and unlocks the mug-specific attribute set.
Why category choice is high-stakes
- It determines which attributes Etsy prompts you for. Wrong category = wrong attributes = invisible to filtered search.
- It determines which category browse pages include your listing.
- It influences search relevance - Etsy weighs category match heavily for ambiguous queries.
- It’s harder to change later than you’d think - switching mid-life drops attributes that don’t map to the new category.
How to pick the right category
- Search Etsy for the term a buyer would type. Look at the top results. Note their category. That’s almost always your category too.
- When in doubt, pick the most specific leaf. “Mugs” is better than “Drink & Barware” which is better than “Kitchen & Dining.”
- Don’t pick a category just because it has lower competition. If your product doesn’t belong, conversion will be terrible and Etsy demotes you anyway.

- Shop section is your own. Affects shop home page navigation only.
A listing has one category and one shop section. They’re independent.
Common mistakes
- Picking a generic top-level category to "reach more buyers." It's the opposite - generic placement = lower relevance rank.
