Digital download

A digital download listing is one where Etsy delivers the file automatically once the buyer pays. You upload up to 5 files (20 MB each), and Etsy emails the buyer a download link plus stores it in their account.

What changes vs. a physical listing

• No shipping profile. Etsy hides shipping fields entirely.
• No processing time (delivery is instant).
• No returns or refunds. Etsy’s policy is that digital downloads are non-refundable, and disputes are usually decided in the seller’s favor.
• No tracking number to add. The “shipped” step is automatic at purchase.

What stays the same

• 6.5% transaction fee.
• Payment processing fee (3% + $0.25 in the US).
• Listing fee ($0.20).
• Tags, title, attributes, photos.

Why digital is harder than it looks

• High refund-request rate even though refunds aren’t required. Buyers regularly message asking for refunds because “it didn’t print right.” Templated reply ready.
• Piracy. Etsy doesn’t enforce copyright on resold downloads. Watermarking and store-side licensing language is your only real protection.
• Photo requirements are different. Mockups carry the listing - flat preview shots don’t sell.

Personalized digital products

Etsy’s personalization field doesn’t trigger a custom file delivery. If a buyer customizes a digital product, you have to manually upload the personalized file and send it via Etsy message. Many digital sellers use a third-party tool (Corjl, Templett) to deliver personalized files automatically.
