Listings
Draft listing
A listing in progress - not yet published, not buyer-visible, not charged the $0.20 listing fee.
Quick facts
- Buyer-visible: No
- Costs money: No until you publish
- Listing fee charged: at the moment of publish ($0.20)
- Auto-deletion: drafts are kept indefinitely in most regions
- Where it lives: Listings tab > Draft filter
A draft listing is the “saving for later” state. You can build out the listing - photos, title, variations, attributes - and walk away without paying the $0.20 listing fee. The listing isn’t searchable, buyable, or counted toward any quota.
When drafts are useful
- Catalog planning. Build 20 listings over a week, then publish them all on the same day for a coordinated launch.
- Photo waiting. You have the copy but the photographer hasn’t sent the final files.
- Seasonal staging. Build holiday listings in October, publish them in November.
- CSV-based bulk creation. Tools that build listings via the API typically create them as drafts first, then let you review before publishing.
What’s not so great about drafts in the native UI
- No bulk edit on drafts. You build them one at a time.
- No diff view. If you change a draft, the previous version is gone.
- No preview that matches the final listing page exactly.
What publish actually does
- Charges $0.20 to your payment account.
- Starts the 4-month renewal clock.
- Makes the listing immediately searchable and buyable.
- Triggers any connected Etsy Ads (if eligible).
Tips
- Build drafts in batches (e.g., 10 at a time) and publish on a consistent day of the week. Keeps your shop's "new arrivals" cadence predictable for repeat buyers.
- CSV-based draft creation is the only sane path past ~5 listings at once.
