Fees

Renewal fee

The $0.20 Etsy charges every 4 months to keep a listing active, or whenever a multi-quantity unit sells.

Quick facts
  • Amount: $0.20 USD per renewal
  • Frequency: every 4 months for active listings
  • Auto-renew: on by default for every new listing
  • Multi-quantity trigger: each unit sold beyond the first triggers a $0.20 listing fee on top
  • Manual renew: free to turn off; listing then expires after 4 months

Every Etsy listing expires after four months. The renewal fee is the $0.20 Etsy charges to put it back on the clock for another four months. By default, every listing has auto-renew on - so this happens silently in the background, and most sellers don’t notice until they look at their bill.

When renewal triggers

  • Calendar: four months after the last publish or renewal date.
  • Sale of a multi-quantity unit: every additional unit sold from the same listing also triggers a $0.20 renewal-style fee, on top of the 6.5% transaction fee. (A single-quantity listing that sells goes to “sold out,” not renewed.)
  • Manual renew: clicking “Renew” anywhere in the dashboard.

Why this fee surprises sellers

A 500-listing shop renews about 125 listings per month at $0.20 each. That’s $25/mo just to keep the catalog visible - separate from per-sale fees. If 40% of those listings haven’t sold in a year, you’re paying $10/mo to keep dead inventory active.

How to control it

  • Turn off auto-renew on dead-weight listings. They expire harmlessly; you can re-publish later for the same $0.20.
  • Audit annually. Sort by “views” or “favorites” ascending and decide what’s earning its $0.20.
  • Use bulk tools. Etsy doesn’t let you toggle auto-renew in bulk natively - you’ll need a CSV-aware tool to do it without 200 individual page loads.
Common mistakes
  • Assuming renewal is per-sale. It's a calendar fee, separate from transaction fees.
  • Letting every listing auto-renew without auditing for years.
  • Manually renewing right after listing - duplicates the $0.20 charge.
