In stock
A listing's inventory state when at least one purchasable unit is available.
- Where it lives: Listing edit page > Inventory & pricing
- Per-variation stock: yes, when variations are enabled
- Auto-deactivate when stock hits 0: optional setting
- Multi-quantity: each unit sold beyond the first costs $0.20 listing fee
“In stock” just means the listing has positive available quantity. The interesting part is how Etsy tracks it across variations and what happens when stock hits zero.
How quantity works
- A single-variation listing has one quantity number. Sells go down 1 each.
- A multi-variation listing has a quantity per combination. “Blue, 11oz” can sell out while “Cream, 11oz” stays in stock.
- When all combinations hit zero, the listing flips to “sold out.”
Multi-quantity fee
This catches sellers off guard. Setting a listing to quantity 50 doesn’t charge you 50 × $0.20 upfront. Instead, the first sale uses the original $0.20; each subsequent sale from the same listing charges another $0.20 on top of the 6.5% transaction fee. So a 50-unit listing that sells out has paid $10 in listing/renewal-style fees plus 50 × 6.5% transaction fees.
Auto-deactivate option
On the listing edit page you can choose what Etsy does when stock hits zero:
- Renew automatically (default): the listing tries to renew, but if you forgot to add stock, it just goes sold-out.
- Deactivate: hides the listing from buyers when stock runs out.
Why this matters at scale
Inventory tracking inside Etsy is fine for 20 listings. Past that, sellers either sync with their accounting tool or run regular CSV exports to reconcile what Etsy thinks is in stock vs. what’s actually on the shelf.
- Setting quantity to 999 to "never run out" - every unit sold past the first costs another $0.20 listing fee.
- Forgetting that variations have per-combination stock, not a single shared pool.
