Variation
A buyer-selectable option on a listing (size, color, scent) that can carry its own price, SKU, and stock.

Variations let one listing represent many slightly-different products. A “Ceramic mug” listing can offer 11oz / 15oz, blue / cream / black - that’s two variation types and six purchasable combinations.
How Etsy structures variations
- A listing can have up to two variation types (e.g. Size + Color).
- Each type can have up to 70 options.
- Each combination can carry its own price, quantity, and SKU.
- One listing photo can be tagged to a variation option (so picking “blue” swaps the lead photo to the blue mug).
Why people get this wrong
- Sellers often duplicate a listing for every color when one listing with a color variation would do. That’s $0.20 per duplicate, every 4 months, forever.
- The opposite mistake: cramming wildly different products under one listing because variations are free. Buyers expect variations to be the same product in different flavors, not entirely different items.
Editing variations at scale
Etsy’s variation editor is one listing at a time, with no bulk operations. Updating prices for “11oz mugs” across 40 listings means 40 separate visits to the Inventory page. CSV-based tools and dedicated variation editors fix this - one of the most common reasons sellers reach for outside software once their catalog grows.
- Creating one listing per color when you could have used a single listing with a color variation - wastes renewal fees.
- Forgetting to tick "Inventory and pricing varies for each combination" - Etsy then collapses your variations into one price/SKU.
- Using variations to fake a multi-product bundle. Buyers report and Etsy can deactivate.
