Made to order
A listing for items produced after the buyer purchases - not held in physical inventory.
Quick facts
- Inventory model: produce on demand
- Processing time: usually longer (5–21 days typical)
- Personalization: often combined with made-to-order workflows
- Cancellation expectation: lower (work has started)
Made-to-order is an inventory pattern, not an Etsy feature. The listing looks identical to a stock listing - there’s no checkbox that flips it on. You communicate “made to order” through your processing time, your description, and your personalization options.
What signals “made to order” to a buyer
- A processing time of 5+ business days.
- A clear sentence in the description (e.g., “Each piece is made to order in our studio. Allow 7–10 business days for production before shipping.”).
- A personalization field that requires custom input (name, monogram, dimensions).
Why it matters operationally
- Refund expectations are different. Once production starts, “I changed my mind” cancellations cost you actual labor. Be clear in the description about your cancellation policy.
- Shipping profiles need extra padding. The processing time you advertise becomes the Star Seller threshold for “shipped on time.” Underestimate by 2 days and you’ll miss the metric.
- Inventory in Etsy stays at a high number because you’re not depleting stock. Set quantity to whatever capacity number is reasonable for the production cadence.
Made-to-order vs. custom order
A made-to-order listing has fixed options the buyer picks (size, color, name). A custom order is a fully bespoke negotiation in messages - different workflow, often a private listing.
Tips
- Pad processing time by 2 days vs. your actual capacity. Late shipments tank Star Seller faster than slow defaults do.
- Re-state the production timeline in the personalization help text - buyers skip the description.
