Processing time
The number of business days between order receipt and shipment, set on each shipping profile.
- Where it lives: shipping profile settings
- Range: 1 business day to several weeks
- Used by Etsy: to calculate the buyer's estimated delivery date
- Used by Star Seller: as the deadline for "shipped on time"
- Buyer-visible: yes, displayed on the listing page
Processing time is how long you tell Etsy and the buyer it’ll take you to get the package out the door after they order. It’s a count of business days, set on each shipping profile.
Why this number matters more than it looks
- Star Seller “shipped on time” is calculated against this number. Set it too tight and a busy week tanks the metric.
- Etsy’s estimated delivery date combines processing time + shipping carrier transit time. Buyers see a delivery window before checkout. Conservative processing widens the window; aggressive processing narrows it (and risks lateness).
- Buyer expectations. A buyer who sees “ships in 1 business day” expects 1 day. Three days later they’re messaging.
A workable rule
Set processing time to your realistic capacity, then add 2 business days of buffer. If you can usually ship in 2 days, advertise 4. The conversion penalty from a slightly longer window is far smaller than the Star Seller and review penalty from late shipments.
Made-to-order and seasonal spikes
- Made-to-order items: 7–14 business days is normal.
- Seasonal spike (Q4, Mother’s Day): bump processing time up two weeks before peak so you’re not promising 1-day turnarounds during a flood.
Vacation
If you’re stepping away, use vacation mode, not “increase processing time to 30 days.” Vacation mode pauses orders entirely. Stretching processing time leaves your shop buyable but lets impatient buyers convert and then complain.
- Bump processing time before peak season, not during. By the time you're drowning in orders, the new number doesn't apply to existing orders.
