Photo dimensions

The recommended size and aspect ratio for Etsy listing photos.

Quick facts
  • Recommended size: 2000 px on the shortest side
  • Maximum file size: 20 MB per photo
  • Best aspect ratio: 4:3 (matches the carousel display)
  • Photos per listing: up to 10
  • Format: JPG or PNG

Etsy displays photos at large sizes on desktop and high-DPI on mobile. Underspecified photos look blurry or get cropped strangely; oversized photos waste your upload bandwidth and slow page loads.

  • 2000 px on the shortest side. This handles every Etsy display size including the zoom feature.
  • 4:3 aspect ratio. This matches Etsy’s carousel display. Square or portrait photos get cropped or letterboxed.
  • Under 20 MB. Etsy rejects files larger than 20 MB. Optimize JPEGs to ~1–3 MB; the visual difference vs. a 10 MB file is invisible.
  • JPG or PNG. WebP and HEIC are not supported.

Photo slots - fill them all

You get 10 slots. Fill them all. The composition that matters:

  1. Hero - clean, well-lit, on white or simple background. This is the search-result thumbnail.
  2. Lifestyle - product in use or in context.
  3. Scale - product next to a known object or human.
  4. Detail - close-up of texture, stitching, finish.
  5. Variations - show each color/size if applicable. 6–10. Backstory, packaging, materials, alternate angles.

Why dimensions matter for SEO

Etsy weights listing completeness in quality scoring. A listing with 2 photos is treated as less complete than one with 10 - even if the 2 photos are excellent.

Common mistakes
  • Using 800 px-wide product photos. They look pixelated on retina displays.
  • Filling only 4 photo slots and leaving 6 empty. Easy completeness win to fix.
