Return policy
Your shop's rules about returns, exchanges, and cancellations - Etsy uses it to decide buyer disputes.
Quick facts
- Where it lives: Shop Manager > Settings > Policies
- Set per shop, then attached per listing (with overrides allowed)
- Required: yes, you cannot leave it blank
- Buyer-visible: shown on every listing page in an expandable section
- Used in cases: Etsy references your policy when judging buyer disputes
Your return policy tells buyers - and Etsy - what happens when something goes wrong. It’s required (you can’t publish without one) and it’s referenced any time a buyer opens a case against you.
What goes in a useful policy
- Whether you accept returns at all. Many shops don’t (handmade, custom, perishable). Saying so up-front prevents disputes.
- Window (e.g., 14 days from delivery).
- Who pays return shipping. Almost always the buyer, except in defect/damage cases.
- Exchanges - accepted or not, and on what terms.
- Custom and personalized items are typically excluded from returns. Etsy supports this; just state it clearly.
- Cancellation - through what point can a buyer cancel? Before shipment is the standard answer.
What Etsy enforces vs. what you enforce
- Etsy will side with the buyer in a case if the item is not as described, damaged in shipping, or never arrived - regardless of your stated policy. These are baseline buyer protections.
- For everything else (buyer’s remorse, change of mind, sizing they didn’t read), Etsy applies your policy as written. Vague policies hurt you here.
Personalized items
Make the no-returns-on-personalized-items language explicit. Etsy and most buyers respect it, but only if it’s stated.
Common mistakes
- Leaving the default Etsy template policy unchanged. It's vague and doesn't cover personalized work.
- "No returns ever" - Etsy still enforces baseline buyer protections, and the language reads aggressively to buyers.
