Section

“Section” is the everyday shorthand most Etsy sellers use for shop section - your shop-only category buckets that organize listings on your shop home page. Buyers see them as filters in your shop sidebar; the rest of Etsy never sees them.

A listing belongs to exactly one section, you get up to 20 sections, and the order is set in Shop Manager > Listings > Sections.

Section vs. category - the distinction that trips people up

• Section is your internal grouping (“Mugs,” “New arrivals,” “Sale”). Shop-only.
• Category is Etsy’s global taxonomy (“Home & Living > Mugs”). Controls Etsy-wide search.

A listing can sit in your “Holiday gifts” section while its Etsy category is “Mugs” - the two systems are independent.

Why this matters more than it looks

First-time buyers usually arrive on a single listing and never see your shop home. Repeat buyers, favoriters, and people from your social channels land on the shop page first - and that’s where sections do the work. Empty or default-named sections (“Section 1”) are a small but visible trust signal that the shop isn’t being maintained.
